Bulletin: Who's Bad?

Who’s bad?

By RICH CALDER

The MTA — for refusing to honor Michael Jackson at a Downtown Brooklyn subway station, a local politician says.

The Gloved One rocked the bustling Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in 1987 while filming his famous Martin Scorsese-directed “Bad” video there.

Since his June 25 death, City Councilwoman Letitia James has been trying to convince the agency to rename or co-name the station in Jackson’s honor, but to no avail.

James (D-Brooklyn) said Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials even told her to “beat it,” when she asked to hang a plaque at the station in honor of the late King of Pop.

But she’s not giving up. James told The Post she plans to organize a petition drive to pressure the agency into reconsidering.

“Having Michael Jackson visit and moonwalk at this station was a huge deal not only for Brooklyn, but all of New York in the ’80s,” she said. “And renaming this station in his honor would put it on the map and help ensure that people don’t forget.”

The acclaimed 16-minute Scorsese-Jackson video is more of a short film and also features a young Wesley Snipes in one of his early acting roles before he became a Hollywood star.

The MTA has no subway stations in its system named or co-named after individuals, mostly because it could confuse riders, agency sources said.

But then again, if the price is right, anything is possible.

Earlier this year, agency honchos agreed to the MTA’s first-ever naming rights deal. Developer Bruce Ratner is set to pay the MTA $200,000 a year over 20 years to add the name of his planned Barclays Center NBA arena to the Atlantic Avenue transit hub in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

“I guess they’ll listen for the right price,” said James.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said the agency “prohibits” plaques at stations and “is developing guidelines for station naming-rights deals” as the cash-strapped MTA seeks new revenue streams.

In the “Bad” video, Jackson plays a boy named Daryl who returns from private school to his “gangsta”-ridden neighborhood and takes friends — led by Snipes’ character — to the subway station to show he’s still “Bad.”

All of the music scenes were filmed at the station, which serves the A, C and G lines.

Straphangers at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station last week called James’ plan a real “Thriller.”

“Michael Jackson is an icon, and renaming the station would be great because more people would realize it is where he filmed one of his greatest videos,” said Lisa DiMeglio, a Brooklyn teacher.

Video: The GO! Experiment Trailer

This sounds very dope! I'll let FSD explain it:

A short while back I teamed up with Drew from Enstrumental and Raphael Nash from Endangered Peace to pay homage to the 1995 finale of Yo! MTV Raps, where they had a room full of elite rappers passing the mic around in a giant cypher. You may remember it: Meth, Red, MC Serch, Rakim, Erick Sermon, etc, etc were all in attendance.

Well, in 2009 we assembled a group of Chicago emcees to come together in the same room at the same time to create what we've titled 'The GO! Experiment'.

Audio: Swollen Members - Warrior

Swollen Members have leaked a second cut off their anticipated album Armed To The Teeth, which drops October 13th. Wow, I had no idea Mad Child was in such dire straits. Well, I'm glad he's well and back to doing some good music.

"It's been a crazy few years for not only me, but also Swollen. I was in a very bad state for the last three years; drugs and an abusive lifestyle had gotten the best of me. I was severely addicted to Oxycontin, doing just over twenty 80mg pills a day, which equals the strength of about 320 Percocet pills. I became public enemy #1 with the cops due to my association with Hell's Angels and other clubs and was under constant surveillance with wire taps, etc. There was a time when I couldn't leave my house without being confronted by the cops. At least 3 or 4 police vehicles would show up every time I left the house," says Mad Child. "And with a diet of two quarts of ice cream a night, I gained a lot of weight and slipped into a very dark place. I was basically living in my theater room for the last two years and spent over half a million dollars on pills. I wasn't paying attention to my business affairs either so I lost two million dollars over the course of my addiction. I went from living the high life with girls, money and parties to watching movies in my theatre and being a zombie with only my dogs to keep me company. What I now realize is that I put the lives of many people on hold during my addiction. There are a lot of people that count on me and I know I let them down. Thank God I have a studio in my house and an amazing group who never abandoned me. The only good thing that came out of the last three years is the album we are about to drop."

Download: B.o.B - Should Have Been The First Album

This is something the boyz at 2DB put together. I agree. I'll let them explain:

I’m sure it’s well known, but I’m a pretty big fan of Mr. Bobby Ray. And I think it’s safe to say that 94% of the dopeboyz/girlz that frequent the site are as well. It’s also well known that I despise Atlantic Records. So with that said, I put together a collection of (tagless) joints that have leaked since the time I very first heard dude in hopes that it can spread around the internets and hopefully wake those dinosaurs up. Word is they really like B.o.B but are trying to force him into a 360 deal. And if he doesn’t conform, they are gonna shelve him. I mean, imagine if this was actuallyhis debut album? Sheeiiiit… I vote we call/email/run-up-on Atlantic and tell them to stop fucking around.

This is the first leak off Definitive Jux Presents IV, which drops September 1st.

In an age where people never get enough sleep, Despot and Ratatat have teamed up to bring you 'Look Alive.' A song told from the perspective of a man who just purchased TWO original Barcelona chairs for his new apartment. No problem. To complement the lyrics that are almost as rich as the rapper, Ratatat has put together a poverty stricken beat! As you may be able to assume, the beat and the lyrics have a very tense friendship. Imagine what it must feel like to be alive and to walk around looking like you are not. If you can't imagine what that must feel like, we have it on good accord that it is embarrassing.

Video: Invincible feat. Abeer & Suhell Nafar - People Not Places (Mini-Doc)

You have to see this!! Very dope mini-doc based on Invincible's "People Not Places". Very informative and the story at the end got me. It shows the possibility of the human spirit when you open yourself up to other people's experiences. You can find some more vids on Emergence Travel. Here's the extended explanation below:

This docu-music-video is based on the song of the same name by Invincible featuring Abeer andSuhell Nafar (DAM). Invincible plays two characters in the video: a Birthright Israel tour recruiter, styled as a used car salesman; and herself, subverting the recruiter’s mission by exposing the buried Palestinian significance of each location in the tour.

Invincible exposes the process of historic and continued colonization of Palestine as being even deeper than land seizure and ethnic cleansing, but one that attempts to erase the indigenous language, culture, and memory of Palestinians.

Intertwined with the music video are interviews that expose how Zionist claims to a Jewish “birthright” to Palestine have come at the expense of the Palestinian Right of Return to their indigenous land. These interviews show how the Right of Return of Palestinians is interconnected with the resistance of occupied and displaced refugee communities globally, from Turtle Island to Puerto Rico and beyond.

Photography: Patrick Runte - Jump 'N Run

This is dope!

Hamburg-based photographer Patrick Runte recreates scenes from clasic videos games in his Jump ‘n’ Run series. Pacman, Space Invaders, Pong, and more are all composed in real life situations where Runte has set up beautiful (and accurate!) depictions of the video games. Runte offers the following explanation: “The work is inspired by Oskar Schlemmer and his idea of the ‘Triadic Ballett’ and the term ‘Streetplay’”, Runte explains. “I wanted to compile old video games, which are based on simple geometric forms and make them able to be experienced / felt by the human body.”

Video: Eternia & Moss - Meet The Band & Mental Meltdowns (Road To Release Ep. 10)

Eternia gives some props to her bandmates and she had some meltdowns. I hope this doesn't affect the At Last project. I'll let her explain:

I had two meltdowns this week.

The first happened after a "Tshirt Partnership" meeting I had, in which I just felt super overwhelmed by the sheer volume of emails, texts, phonecalls, work, task lists, pressures from the album, family, friends, finances... that I just broke down. I got so frustrated with myself, like "why can't you even provide a clear answer when someone asks 'what's wrong?' or 'how can i help?' ". So that night i started writing the "Reason List", a.k.a. the "Burden List". The words were coming so fast, my pen couldn't keep up. I stopped after 18 pages. And i wasn't even done yet.

The answer to "What's Wrong?" is it's not just ONE thing. It cannot be neatly summarized for y'all. It's deep.

The second meltdown happened after my manager met with MoSS. I won't go into details, but lets just say we're not on the same page re: how and when this album should come out. Or even on the same page re: all these blogs and video work I been bustin' my ass to do every week for y'all. And we're pretty much at a stalemate. And mutual respect and consideration has been thrown out the window. And, just the thought of 2 years of extremely hard work and emotionally draining output (on both our part) going down the drain was enough to make me bawl. I felt like I couldn't breathe. If this is what a panic attack feels like - I had it. I was gasping for air, quite literally. I felt sick to my stomach. Heartrate was outta control. The room spinning, all that.

I share with you because this is who I am and have always been, in my music and in my day-to-day life: 100% Transparent. (or as close to that as one can get). 100% Honest. 100% Direct. I of course have been criticized for that transparency, but I have always despised facades & illusions. It's probably the one aspect of the music industry that I hate the most.

So here you have the TRUTH, ladies and gentlemen: I have no idea when the album's coming out. I have no idea how long we will do these video blogs until you guys stop caring or get annoyed 'cause the album hasn't been released, or tune out. I have no idea how long I will be able to maintain my sanity and dignity while being disrespected by those I actually admire or have (had) respect for. I have no idea how long I can fight or try to convince people to care as much as I do about this project.

I do know that I am giving this all of me. So much so that my mind, body, and spirit are suffering from the extent of care and effort I am putting into this. So much so that my relationship with GOD has taken the back-burner... which is JUST WRONG. He may need to take it all away, to prove a point.

I'm at a loss. There you have it.

enjoy the video. I really only had the motivation to make it this week because it was not about me, so much as it was about my amazing players. I know I have a world of support out there, that I don't take for granted. Just wish one of y'all ran Def Jam. (HA).

humbly,

e.
