I Was At The 2009 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival

With Summer in a holding pattern and Spring having trouble clearing the runway, Hip Hop fans from everywhere descended on Brooklyn with no regard for the predictable, rainy day. As the rest of the New York City population waited for the sun, Brooklyn declared the time to shine was now.

Thousands of fans packed it in to a tent in the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO, Brooklyn to experience a summer event. Brooklyn Bodega's Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is in its 5th year with no signs of stopping. The lineup was filled with newcomers and Hip Hop's greats, so it was hard to stay home.

This festival boasted something I haven't seen in a long time: diversity. It really didn't matter who you were or what you liked, there was something for everyone. The stage boasted different styles and sounds ranging from Styles P to Dead Prez to The Metermaids and The Brown Bag All Stars. The only similarity was that it fell under the tent of Hip Hop. I was re-introduced to the pulse, without any technological barriers, just simply live and in color.

Family Day kicked off the festival with the younger generation displaying their talents. This shows the dedication Wes Jackson, the executive director of the festival, and his Brooklyn Bodega team have to passing along the history of Hip Hop and keeping the fire burning. Toni Blackman came on the scene with Black Girls Rock, a group of talented young ladies who rhymed and spit some serious poetry. There were also performances from the Brooklyn Crescents Youth Lacrosse Team, The Beacon Program and the League of Young Voters. The point of Family Day is to provide positive and uplifting programming for Hip Hop families.

After the kiddies warmed up the stage, Homeboy Sandman took over hosting duties for the middle portion of the festival. His freestyles and charm entertained the crowd in between acts. The first to approach was March Show-N-Prove winners Children of the Night. The energy and chemistry was there as they performed "100%", "Time Out (Rmx)" and more. Eagle Nebula, Brokn English, Nyle, Donny Goines, The Metermaids, April Show-N-Prove winners The Brown Bag All Stars, Keys 'N Krates, Kal Spencer and Tanya Morgan all left it on the stage leaving no room for the audience to take a breath.

The crowd started to pack it in as the legend Uncle Ralph McDaniels graced the stage, getting incredible love from the fans. With the main host in place, the buzz began to build for the forthcoming performances. Tiye Phoenix stepped up to represent the ladies as she ran through cuts from her album Half Woman|Half Amazin'. Some of the surprises of the day came in the form of Sadat X and OC joining Grand Puba, Black Thought rocking with J. Period, Granddaddy I.U. rocking some hits and Buckshot joining Smif-N-Wessun on stage.

The most energetic performances came at the end when Smif-N-Wessun, Dead Prez, Styles P and the closer Pharaohe Monch all gave the crowd a day to remember. The tent just became hotter and hotter, with hands in the air and heads rocking back and forth. Dead Prez started off performing songs from their new record Pulse Of The People, which left the crowd happy but staring blankly. They brought back the energy with their big record "Hip Hop". Styles murdered the stage with Sheek, leaving Pharaohe to pick up the pieces. Monch held his own and closed out his set with arguably his biggest record "Simon Says". A refreshed energy swooped through the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, uniting the established guard with a new generation of Hip Hop artists.

As the crowd filed out, I could hear everyone's satisfaction underneath their mumbled words and high laughs, nostalgia rising from my memory. The sun never made it to the festival but if you were there, you didn't even notice.

I Was At The Kid Daytona's Come Fly With Me Listening Session

I had the privilege of getting a sneak peek of The Kid Daytona's new album Come Fly With Me at Smash Studios last night. I was the early bird as the crowd began to filter in around seven. The intimate space, with its instruments and plush couch, made it feel like a family gathering in a unique setting as hugs and pounds went around. Daytona grabbed the mic to welcome everyone and set the session off. I waited patiently for the first note to hit and I wasn't disappointed.

"Just Fly" jumps out the gate with big, swooping drums by producer 6th Sense. Daytona flows perfectly with his long Bronx drawl (picture that one). The hits kept on coming with "Air Jordan", "The Groove" and "Honestly", a truly epic track by Cook Classics. When the track "Contact!" came on, a light bulb flew off the ceiling, hit me on the arm and crashed to the floor (true story!). "In The Wind", "Right Now Till Then" and "Air Born" give insight into Daytona's personal thoughts and feelings. As the last track played I began to understand, more than ever, that Daytona is truly fresh-air in a world filled with stagnant retreads. The proof came in the knodding heads, tapping feet and smiles from those listening.

The biggest thing I came away with as I walked into the muggy, cloudy night is that Come Fly With Me is a big record. Sonically and lyrically, it generates a feeling of space and time, Daytona's space and time, captured perfectly in a capsule. The blood, sweat and tears are apparent on this album and in talking with Daytona, you can tell this is something he wants the world to hear. So, do yourself a favor come June 30th: get Come Fly With Me for free on the internet, give Daytona love when you see him and don't be afraid to slide him a ten for his efforts.
